The rising sales figures of recent years prove that e-bikes are a great means of transportation. More and more people are enthusiastically cycling, especially with motorized bikes. However, one difficulty that some people encounter when riding e-bikes is getting on them. Surprisingly, this is particularly true for older men.
Why older men have difficulties
In general, all people lose flexibility and strength as they age. This can make it more difficult to get on a bike with a higher frame, as is the case with many e-bikes. Mobility problems are no surprise in old age.
The fact that older men in particular tend to be less flexible is related to the fact that they have often spent years in sedentary jobs. If we look at the white-haired generation, we often still see the old role clichés: the man sat at his desk all his life, while the woman took care of the household and got plenty of exercise. And even if this role cliché has softened, desk jobs in this generation are often still attributed to men, while working women pursued more flexible jobs that involved more physical activity.
Most of the time, the difficulty lies in swinging one leg over the saddle or shifting your body weight onto the leg that is standing on the pedal. Of course, it's not just older men who can have difficulty getting on an e-bike! Anyone, especially someone who rarely cycles, can find it difficult. But with a little practice and the right technique, anyone can master getting on an e-bike.
How to make climbing easier
If getting on an e-bike is a challenge, there are a few techniques you can learn to make the process easier. Here are a few tips:
1. Choose the right e-bike! If you have difficulty getting on a higher bike, you should opt for an e-bike with a lower step-through frame. There are many e-bike models with lower frames that are easier to get on. The model should also suit your weight and height. 2. Park the e-bike on a flat surface! Park the e-bike on a level surface to ensure that it is stable. Make sure that the bike is near a stable wall or fence that you can hold on to. This is especially important if you have difficulty maintaining your balance. 3. Use a mounting aid! There are various types of mounting aids available, including a mounting strap or a small platform that attaches to the bike frame. These aids can provide you and your balance with additional support. 4. Use the correct technique To make mounting the e-bike easier, you should use the correct technique. You can, of course, ask your trusted specialist dealer to show you how to do this.
- First, stand sideways next to the e-bike and hold it with one hand on the handlebars and the other hand on the saddle or frame. Lean the bike slightly toward you.
- Then swing the leg closest to the bike over the saddle and place it on the pedal.
- Press down on the pedal with your foot to set the e-bike in motion. At the same time, bend the knee of the leg that is on the ground and push yourself off the ground. Once you have found your balance, practice regularly.
